Brecon Record?

The delivery of the result at Brecon and Radnorshire was a telling insight into how language now works in Wales. The people and things that matter are in Welsh, while the rest are in English.

Now, if the Lib Dems also won back Sheffield Hallam, then they really would be on a roll. And the Conservatives need to get the message that they are never going to storm "traditional Labour heartlands", of which there are not that many, anyway. No matter how Brexit, those people and places are never going to vote for them. They just aren't.

Rather, the Conservatives need to win back the voters whom they are losing: middle-class, usually in the private sector, economically right-wing (look up Jo Swinson's record as a Minister in the Coalition), socially liberal, Greenish in principle but not very Green in practice, and staunchly Remain.

Had the last Parliament run its course, then the Conservative Party would have lost dozens of Remain seats to the Lib Dems in 2020, mostly in the South of England but also elsewhere. It may yet do so whenever the General Election comes, when those same voters are also going to hand back several seats to the SNP.

Another hung Parliament is coming, and we need our people to hold the balance of power in it. A new party is now in the process of registration. I will stand for Parliament here at North West Durham even if I can raise only the deposit, which I could do by going pretty overdrawn, although that was not how I was brought up. I would still prefer to raise the £10,000 necessary to mount a serious campaign, but I am no longer making my candidacy conditional on having done so. In any event, please email davidaslindsay@hotmail.com. Very many thanks.
