Why, If It Prosper?

I reckon that Gavin Williamson is being set up. But we shall see. Consider that he used to be the Chief Whip. There are people in this world who have been intimidated by Gavin Williamson. And some of them are legislating for the rest of us.

The present Vice-President for Global Affairs and Communications at Facebook was until 2015 the Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, so Silicon Valley employment opportunities are available either to a British former Cabinet Minister or, no doubt, to a British former Cabinet Secretary.

Breaking the Official Secrets Act (which ought to be repealed, but that is another story), in the service of one or more foreign commercial interests by which one has a reasonable expectation of future employment? There is a word for that kind of thing, isn't there? Why doesn't someone like Tom Watson just make a complaint to the Police and dare them not to chase it up?

Penny Mordaunt is the fifth Defence Secretary since the 2010 Election. The position has become one of those historically curious ways of having an individual in the Cabinet, like that of Lord Privy Seal, or Lord President of the Council, or Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. There seems to be no sense that it is still a proper job.

But then, we now have a "National Security Council", and a "National Security Adviser" who has never been elected to anything. The present one doubles up as the Cabinet Secretary. There was none of this before David Cameron. It is a hangover from when Noughties Tory Boys used to call for things like a "Department of Homeland Security" in silly mid-Atlantic accents.

Another hung Parliament is coming, however, and we need our people to hold the balance of power in it. It has become a local commonplace that I am on 30-30-30 with Labour and the Conservatives here at North West Durham, so that any one of us could be the First Past the Post. I will stand for this seat, if I can raise the £10,000 necessary to mount a serious campaign. Please email davidaslindsay@hotmail.com. Very many thanks.
