Irish Ayes No More

When it came to indistinguishable parties screaming ancient and long-irrelevant tribal abuse at each other, then nowhere did it longer or better than the Irish Republic.

But Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael have just taken less than half the vote between them.

And more people have voted for the Greens and for an alliance of two Trotskyist factions (itself something of an achievement) than have voted for the Irish Labour Party.

If the change can happen there, then it can happen anywhere.

  1. Political parties in Ireland were, for a long time, tribal institutes of the sort you describe. Sons inherited electoral seats from their fathers. But that's out now, and the Irish electorate is very varied, and interested in ideas.
