Batting Order

I have never understood why we made so much of a fuss about football in the North East when we were really not very good at it, and when we were much better at cricket, which does not have the class connotations here that it has in the South.

But then, I also wonder why we make so much of a fuss about football in England as a whole when we are really not very good at it, and when we are much better at cricket, a game, moreover, which really was invented here.

  1. Excellent Hitchens column today on how the Tories are becoming the image of Labour-with Osborne following the policies of Commissar Hewitt on female workers.

  2. Ah, dear old Pattie, who used to have to tell speakers at Labour Party Conferences not to use the word "equality" because "the preferred term is "fairness"." As good a reason as Lynton Crosby for suffering no delusion that the Old Dominions have basically British political cultures.

By contrast, try this: "Why does the Government consider that looking after children is a job deserving of payment when it is done by a stranger, but not when it is done by the child's own mother or father?"

The words of the late, and far from perfect, Hard Left battleaxe, Audrey Wise MP. Attacking the Blair Government in 1997.

She also described child pornography as the product of, "a greedy society where private profit reigns supreme."

All in all, a very long way from the three (or two and a bit) anarcho-capitalist parties. At least there are no longer nearly four.

Peter is going a bit off the boil, by the way. He is playing to his gallery a bit too much. He needs to watch it.

    Now, on topic, please.
