Fighting For What, Exactly?

At PMQs, the Yorkshire Tory farmer Robert Goodwill asked why the troops in Afghanistan were being fed beef from Argentina instead of from the United Kingdom. Everyone, including Gordon Brown, thought that this was terribly funny. It wasn't, and it isn't.

If a country cannot even be bothered to feed herself, importing not just exotica but staples that are or could be produced here perfectly easily, then why does she have Armed Forces at all? What, exactly, are they supposed to be defending? And why, exactly?
