For tedious reasons, I am not in Durham today. But I have seen the pictures of the very small Down with the Crown contingent, and I did not recognise anyone there. They are not the local Left. Many of those would agree with their sentiment. But that is not who these are. They are a touring act. In fact, the well-wishers waiting for the King and Queen was entertained by the Durham Miners' Association Brass Band.
Who does anyone think would win a British presidential election? Where is the existing classless and incorruptible republic? In their own respective terms, the monarchist and republican arguments are both rubbish, so the case for change has not been made. And what does the monarchy take from republicans? Whereas its abolition would hurt millions of fellow-citizens. For what? To what end? To whose benefit?
In their own respective terms, the monarchist and republican arguments are both rubbish, so the case for change has not been made. Exactly.
ReplyDeleteI do think that that is one of my better lines.
