It would be a contempt of court to incite the Prison Officers' Association to strike. But the extreme unsafety of their workplace, which is not news to some of us, makes every workplace unsafe, so all 47 of the other trade unions affiliated to the TUC should take industrial action.
Although the POA is not affiliated to the Labour Party, my union, Unite, is. Yet Angela Rayner wants its members in Birmingham to capitulate, not even to a Labour council, but to the commissioners who had been appointed by Michael Gove. Would they take an eight thousand pound pay cut? Would he? Would she? Only under a Labour Government is there this fake both-siding that always comes out in favour of the bosses. The Conservatives do not even bother to pretend, an approach that is comparatively admirable.
Every penny that anyone other than the unions gives to the Labour Party buys something specific, as does every penny that anyone gives to the Conservative Party. Only we fund a political party in order to be abused by it. Unite's General Secretaryship is up for election next year. I am no longer medically able to contest elections, but we urgently need someone to contest this one, on a commitment to disaffiliate both from the Labour Party and from the ILGA.
