Or, in the present climate, an Orthodox Jew?
And is this going to apply to all academic departments? Will it be forbidden to hold an academic position in Theology if one held that all sexual activity was sinful outside the marital union of one man and one woman?
Those of us with experience of Theology Departments might point out that that question was academic, indeed. But even so. And anyway, not here. Not in front of the children.
Oh, well, this is what Britain becomes when the core of the governing party's core electorate is the ultra-liberal laity of the Church of England, the Church of Scotland, the Church in Wales, and the old Nonconformist denominations.
Most Muslims vote Labour. Most Catholics still vote Labour mechanically. Most younger Evangelicals seem to be more or less Corbynites. Corbyn himself has close ties both to the black majority churches and to the Haredim.
But the Conservative Party can rely on the votes of the people whose almost morbidly conservative ecclesiastical tastes match and balance their advanced doctrinal and moral liberalism, underwriting, and underwritten by, neoliberal economics.
So what happened in the 1980s is moving into its next stage today. Well, of course it is.
