Bitter Coffey

After all these years, it is easy to forget that someone like Ann Coffey is still there. But apparently she is. And her latest wheeze is to abolish juries in rape trials.

It is 15 years since the Parliament that in the same year abolished all manner of age-old safeguards against conviction, and nodded through the Iraq War into the bargain, also supinely accepted the definition, by Harriet Harman of the Paedophile Information Exchange, of rape as any heterosexual encounter that the female party chose to define as such, even decades after the event, and always under the cover of anonymity.

And now, this. The plan to have such cases tried by panels of judges who had received "specialist training" in insisting that any such allegation was in itself the proof of guilt. That could happen, too. It is right up this Government's street.

Another hung Parliament is coming, however, and we need our people to hold the balance of power in it. I will stand for this parliamentary seat of North West Durham, if I can raise the £10,000 necessary to mount a serious campaign. Please email davidaslindsay@hotmail.com. Very many thanks.
