Sunday Best

I have given up trying to explain to today's youths the horrors of my childhood, when people used to starve to death because the shops were not open on Sundays.

In all seriousness, I think that this is what so many people now find so trying about Christmas. They no longer do it on another 52 occasions every year.

Although mostly ignored, because it occurred on the same night as the American bombing of Libya, Thatcher's one and only Commons defeat was over her attempt to turn Sunday into a normal shopping day.

Cameron has a far smaller majority than she had, while Labour is as sound as ever on this, and for the same reason as ever, namely the trade union link.

But, 29 years on, is any of that majority provided by conservatives or Tories? If so, then another Commons defeat is coming.
