On The Buses

Or not, as the case may be.

This time next month, no bus between Consett and Durham, and therefore via Lanchester, on Sundays or Bank Holidays. Although I'd rather that we had proper public holidays as in other countries, celebrating real things and therefore enjoyed by everyone, even shop assistants, and even bus drivers.

Of course, this serves us right for causing the credit crunch. Doesn't it? The money has to be found from somewhere in order to keep "the City" mechanically paying out exactly the same bonuses as before, if not even larger ones. Doesn't it? ("The City" is no longer properly so called, so that its ancient liberties are void; cities have the full range of people living and working in them, as the City had historically, but as it contrives not to have in the present age.) And the money has to be found from somewhere with which to lose three wars, plus all the other lost wars to come. Doesn't it?

Speaking of mechanical money matters, remember when things like bus fare increases, among numerous others, only happened when they were strictly necessary? They now happen mechanically every year, and sometimes more often than that, whether or not there is the slightest need for them beyond naked profiteering from the transport, food, fuel, power or whatever else that we could not possibly do without. Aren't privatisation, deregulation and demutualisation grand?
