Before the failure of the coup in Venezuela, Newsnight had on an apparently American woman who was introduced as "Juan Guaidó's Personal Representative to the United Kingdom". If Guaidó, of whom even most people in Venezuela had never heard until a few weeks ago, can go around appointing "Personal Representatives" to foreign countries, then so can the rest of us. We ought to expect our emissaries to be taken entirely at face value by the BBC, just as in this case.
The failure of the coup in Venezuela is one in the eye of the European Union, which backed it to the hilt. It is also one in the eye of that huge majority of British MPs which would be unable to locate Venezuela on a map despite affecting to have very strong views about the place. In reality, they just have very strong views about the need to close down the debate around British economic and foreign policy, a debate that had not been open for decades until the summer of 2015.
Another hung Parliament is coming, however, and we need our people to hold the balance of power in it. It has become a local commonplace that I am on 30-30-30 with Labour and the Conservatives here at North West Durham, so that any one of us could be the First Past the Post. I will stand for this seat, if I can raise the £10,000 necessary to mount a serious campaign. Please email davidaslindsay@hotmail.com. Very many thanks.
