Squaring The Pentagon

To check and balance the Gingrich, Bolton or Giuliani whom President Trump is going to need to send to the State Department in order to placate certain Republican interests during his probationary first term, to whom is he turning as Secretary of Defense?

There is growing talk of Jim Webb. A Democrat for most of his life, including the last 10 years, and never elected to anything as a Republican.

There is simply no suitable Republican available.

As will become clear if a Republican is sent to Defense after all. Who is that likely to be? One of the Daniels Larison, McAdams and McCarthy? If only. But we all know that that is not going to happen.

Roles for one or more of them, and for others from within that network (not unknown to me), ought not, however, to be ruled out in a future Administration headed by a Democrat.
