Stately Regress

The £240,000 for which Durham County Council sold Windlestone Hall to William Davenport, who sold it three years later for £2.5 million, is not even 20 times the basic allowance for a member of that authority.

It is not even five times the various allowances paid to the Leader, Councillor Simon Henig, whose wife is also a Councillor.

Yet that Council pays its Teaching Assistants one quarter less than do neighbouring authorities, and it is now proposing to reduce even that by a further 23 per cent.

Simon Henig should resign, and he should then leave public life altogether, in the manner of the late John Profumo.

It really is as simple as that.
