Mind How You Go

Although they were technically just patrolling, Police Officers, including very senior ones, marched in full uniform under the old NUM banners at this year's Durham Miners' Gala at which spoke Ed Miliband, Paul Kenny, Mark Serwotka, Shami Chakrabati of Liberty, John Hendy who is already preparing the legal case for the planned General Strike, and Tom Watson the Murdoch-Slayer, with Bob Crow on the platform and with the Morning Star distributed for free as well as advertised right under the face of the next Prime Minister. Next year, expect Police Officers, including very senior ones, on the platform, possibly with one of them giving a speech.

Both in themselves and as part of an emerging new Triple Alliance with the Prison Officers' Association and the Fire Brigades Union, those splendid bastions of old-style trade union defence of universal entitlement to a public service, the Police Federation, the Police Superintendents' Association and the Association of Chief Police Officers are important parts of the coalition of resistance on the part of everyone who values professional public services and the combination of civilised incomes with sensible prices.
