Sofa Government

There they all were on last night's Newsnight, its pompously styled "political panel" of the failed and discredited Cabinet Minister James Purnell, the famous for not being famous Daniel Finkelstein, and some woman who had previously been "Chief of Staff" to the long-departed Paddy Ashdown.

I know that I am not alone in laughing out loud whenever I am confronted with the "business card" or what have you of one of these putters on of the kettle, even if I do object to their obscene overpayment, and that at your expense and mine, or else to their total non-payment, thereby restricting access to politics to people who can be kept by Mummy and Daddy for a decade after leaving university.

That said, who knows what more onerous duties might have been incumbent on this one while working under Ashdown? The skills acquired might very well have secured her position on the Newsnight political panel. We may call that the Emily Maitlis way to the top. Not that any of them said anything interesting, but whenever she spoke, Jeremy Paxman had a broad grin on his face.

In fact, everyone present was in a very good mood. And why not? All four of them - Finkelstein the Murdoch neocon and failed attempt to provide a brain to George Osborne, Purnell the kicker of people out of their wheelchairs and stamper on their heads, some discarded item of Paddy Ashdown's office equipment, and Paxo - now have what they have always wanted: a Blairite Government without the Labour Party.
