Briding Her Time

When Shamima Begum went off to Syria, then the so-called Islamic State there was supposed to have been our side. We may have been bombing it in Iraq, but we were well and truly rooting for it in Syria.

The only voices against this madness were those of fringe figures such as Jeremy Corbyn.

And some of us were called lying stooges of Assad and Putin for daring to mention that the side that our country was backing held exactly the views that Begum has now expressed on British television.

As for the Manchester Arena attack, it was Theresa May who, as Home Secretary, turned Manchester into the world centre of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group.

It was the two Coalition parties and the Official Opposition that took out the bulwark against that kind of thing in Libya itself, turning the place into the hellhole that it is today.

Again, the only voices against this madness were those of fringe figures such as Jeremy Corbyn. And some of us were called ... well, you know how this one goes.

We have foregone the opportunity to investigate and, if appropriate, to prosecute Begum. Who will do so now?

But in any case, with a Commonwealth passport and with a small British son, she will be back in this country within three years. And no one will say a word.
