March of the Chocolate Soldiers

The list of Lord Oakeshott's beneficiaries is perhaps a little eccentric in parts. But there are far more Labour candidates on it than Lib Dems and Greens combined.

That those 15 Lib Dems, including eight sitting MPs, have accepted such funding from a man who has left the Lib Dems, and who is also funding Labour (where he started out, a long time ago) while praising Ed Miliband, makes them look like something of a party within their party.

They look like the SDP reborn. They look like the Save The SDP campaign within the soon-to-merge SDP reborn.

David Owen has also endorsed Miliband, and made a donation directly to the Labour Party. Robert Skideslky has repeatedly called for a Labour Government.

In addition to the need to secure RMT and FBU funding to make up any shortfall caused by a refusal to accept Tony Blair's Central Asian blood money, there is the need for a letter endorsing Ed Miliband's One Nation Labour Party, to appear in the newspapers in the run-up to the General Election, and indeed as soon as possible.

That letter needs to be signed by Oakeshott, by Owen, by Skidelsky, by Rosie Barnes, by John Cartwright, and by as many other old SDP hands as could be found for the purpose. George Cunningham would be particularly tone-raising.
