What did Ann Widdecombe say that was so controversial?
Before the 1970s, which were well into Widdecombe's adult lifetime, "homosexual" and, if anyone ever used it, "heterosexual" were adjectives, not nouns, and they described acts, not persons.
"Gay identity" may really exist now, but it has not always, and there is no reason to assume that it always will.
Practically everyone who so identifies has had heterosexual experiences at some time. Yet an absolute taboo and even legal sanction apply to the reverse testimony.
It is contrary both to the whole history of human experience, and to the plain facts of biological science, to suggest either that sexual orientation is fixed, or that "gender" is "fluid".
Yet that is where we now are.
