And so, having been tipped the wink by Downing Street, the BBC and Sky News announce that the next Leader of the Conservative Party, and thus the next Prime Minister even if not for very long, will be a former MI6 Officer whose father was Assistant Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service.
Rory Stewart himself wants a Customs Union with the EU, to be put to a referendum with plain old Remain as the other option. This is a done deal. Do not expect anything like enough MPs to nominate another candidate to force a Leadership Election.
Oh, well, while he is there, then people of all parties and none ought to cooperate with him, in order to implement Theresa May’s original Prime Ministerial agenda of workers’ and consumers’ representation in corporate governance, of shareholders’ control over executive pay, of restrictions on pay differentials within companies, of an investment-based Industrial Strategy and infrastructure programme, of greatly increased housebuilding, of action against tax avoidance, of a ban on public contracts for tax-avoiding companies, of a cap on energy prices, of banning or greatly restricting foreign takeovers, of a ban on unpaid internships, and of an inquiry into Orgreave.
Another hung Parliament is coming, however, and we need our people to hold the balance of power in it. It has become a local commonplace that I am on 30-30-30 with Labour and the Conservatives here at North West Durham, so that any one of us could be the First Past the Post. I will stand for this seat, if I can raise the £10,000 necessary to mount a serious campaign. Please email davidaslindsay@hotmail.com. Very many thanks.
