The Central Issue

Like that carry on over expenses years ago, none of this latest carry on has anything to do with policy. But, like expenses, it is being used to further one of the most deeply held aspirations of the One Party State Party. That aim is the centralisation of MPs' staff, so that they would function as a kind of typing pool, allocated by the House authorities, and consisting entirely on One Party State Party functionaries from central casting.

Theresa May has largely dislodged the One Party State Party from its previous control of the Conservative Party, and Jeremy Corbyn has very largely banished it altogether from the Labour Party that, again, it used to control. But not entirely so in the Labour case, while the Conservative Leader is the weakest since the War. The One Party State Party is still there. It has wanted to do this for a very long time. It nearly got away with it over expenses. Do not let it get away with it over this.
