The Charge Sheet

Jo Johnson wants certain universities to put up their fees in order to price out the wrong sort, as much by fear as by anything else.

That would not be necessary unless the wrong sort were attending, and were doing rather well.

State school entrants overtake private school ones very markedly in the second year of undergraduate degrees, and no university in the United Kingdom admits predominantly from the private sector.

By contrast, Jeremy Corbyn's two Es from a grammar school placed him above average. 50 per cent of people who went to grammar schools left with nothing at all. Give that a moment to sink in.

The wonder is that Johnson does not want to bring them back.
