This scurrilous article against the Holy Father and many
other Catholics appeared in last week's edition of The Spectator.
Its author, Dr Damian Thompson, is the Editor-in-Chief of
the Catholic Herald, which is of course distributed on Catholic
Church premises, favoured with advertisements placed by Catholic
institutions, provided with Episcopal Diaries for each week, granted interviews
with senior figures in the Church, and so forth.
I submit in the utmost humility that that state of affairs is no longer appropriate.
I submit in the utmost humility that that state of affairs is no longer appropriate.
This article, although particularly egregious, is
nevertheless of a piece with the transformation of the Herald under
Dr Thompson into a magazine such as carries the work of, for example, Milo
Yiannopolous, representative samples of whose wider recent
effusions include this, this and this.
It is perfectly clear who the target audience is. And who it is not.
