Jack Up

Tim Stanley is better late than never, and at least, having been born in the year that Harriet Harman entered Parliament, he cannot be blamed for the 30-year suppression of the story by, for example, some old Seventies scene queen.

The Daily Mail brings you the antique news again, and would deserve to be taken a bit more seriously if it turned its attention to the other side politically, the one that was in government in the early 1980s.

Nigel Nelson, who is exceptionally close to Ed Miliband, indicates that Harman has been given no carte blanche there.

Harman was this afternoon seated, by whoever decides these things, alongside one of the most obvious candidates to succeed her, Angela Eagle. Harman is toast. Heaven knows, she has had a good run.

But Jack Dromey need not be. What might he do in order to redeem himself?

He should propose that it be made a criminal offence for any person to engage in any sexual act with or upon anyone under the age of 18 who is more than two (or possibly three) years younger than himself, or to incite any such person to commit any such act with or upon him or any third party anywhere in the world.

The maximum sentence would be imprisonment for twice the difference in age, or for life where that difference was five years or more.

Over to him.
