Raising Eyebrows

Or not.

Newsnight did not ask Denis Healey about his membership of the Communist Party, of which Tony Benn was never a member.

Newsnight did not ask Denis Healey about the International Marxist Group, the Trotskyist faction that hated Benn so much, it delivered several Constituency Labour Parties to Healey for Deputy Leader, probably making as much of a difference as the abstentions of those MPs who thus became the Soft Left.

And Newsnight did not ask Denis Healey about the Chagos Islands, for which perhaps the doughtiest battler in the present House of Commons is Benn's close friend, Jeremy Corbyn.

As for the woman whom Dennis Skinner still calls "Shirley Poppins", no spoonful of her sugar ever helped the medicine go down in anything remotely resembling the most delightful way.

But then, this is a person whose mere return to these shores following a Fulbright Scholarship, in order to seek a Labour nomination while still in her early twenties, was reported as news, complete with her picture in the papers.
