Yes, you read aright. A neocon, and a leading neocon at that, has mentioned Max Shachtman in print. Oh, well, it has been 10 years now. But still, we in the common herd are not supposed to be told these things.
The reason that the Nick Cohens of the media concentrated on the SWP in their treatment opposition to the Iraq War, an opposition which embraced 90 per cent of the British population, was that it was the only part that they could even begin to understand.
That suited the SWP down to the ground. Meanwhile, the mainstream opposition to the neoconseravtive war agenda has been as ignored as the left-wing opposition to the EU, or the work of trade unions in promoting high-employment energy independence, or the entire tradition of rural Radicalism, to cite only three of the most obvious examples.
And now, Cohen admits that, in addition to the ancestral ethnic hatred of Russia in his and many other neocons' cases, that hatred (as also of China, of Syria and of Iran, among other places) is motivated plainly and simply by Trotskyism. Of course, we always knew that. Some of us have been saying it for years. But now they themselves are saying it brazenly. Things are not as they were.
