ReplyDeleteReading over several of them this afternoon, though, the influence on friends and correspondents is clear. As they would no doubt tell you, if you asked them. And why not? One writes in order to be read. Clearly, one has been.

Why on earth would they? In at least one case, there is hardly the need. But I, among others, am like the weather or the mood music.
ReplyDeleteDavid, I think Anonymous 17.44 is hinting that you may be exaggerating your influence, since nobody except yourself ever mentions it.
ReplyDeleteWhy mention it? I write in order to be read (which it is very obvious from several of these matters that I have been, as in any case I knew), rather than necessarily to be "mentioned".
ReplyDeleteThis really is a very good book, and not a terribly long one. I shall only be putting up further comments about its contents, which are of the utmost interest and importance.
