The Nuns Are Not The Ones On The Run

There are many things wrong with the Religious Life, and perhaps especially with that of women, in the United States. But if American Catholic Bishops are still recycling Republican rubbish about healthcare, then perhaps they should urge the Holy Father to call for its abolition in Germany, and wait for his response?

Then again, he might well tell them that they were quite right to oppose the eventual Bill, since it lacked the practically abortion-ending combination of the public option and the Stupak Amendment.

There is a reason why countries with public healthcare have far fewer abortions. In most such countries, part of that reason is that the time limit is drastically lower than it is in the United States, with, tellingly, no worry that any sort of social problem might result from that state of affairs.

  1. You mean there are fewer abortions in Socialist Europe! How can that be, America is a Christian Nation!

Putting aside my snarky comment, I wonder to what extent other countries have this divide between 'conservative Catholics" and "progressive Catholics." We used to just have plain Catholics, and most were happy to vote for New Deal Democrats. My guess is that the movement of the Democratic Party towards social liberalism is why there seems to be so many extremely right-wing Catholics these days. Or perhaps American Catholics are simply wealthier nowadays.
