Arriva is being eyed up both by Deutsche Bahn and by SNCF.
So a large chunk of our public transport network is being eyed up by not one, but two, foreign states as such. One of them already owns much of our energy supply.
Isn't capitalism conservative? Isn't privatisation patriotic?

So I presume you object to the iconic Greyhound bus company in the US being Scottish-owned?
ReplyDeleteThat is a matter for the Americans.
ReplyDeleteIconic? Nobody will ride it and you can hardly get anywhere by direct routes but the largest metropoles. And since it is about as expensive as a flight much of the time, a huge proportion of passengers are illegal immigrants and criminals.
ReplyDeleteBut of course, the US govt should own it. They already subsidise it and Amtrak. No foreign ownership!
Exactly. Even the wealthy folks I know are bristling at the recent privatization of our parking meters. Nobody likes being ripped off by pirate companies
ReplyDelete@Thomas: Agreed. Greyhound should be nationalized, or perhaps turned over to the workers to own as a worker-owned and managed cooperative enterprise. Or maybe a mixture of both, a state-owned enterprise with internal worker-management. The last may actually be the ideal for a national bus line.
In which District are you running, Mr. Piccolo?
ReplyDeleteSadly to say, none. A bit young I think, not enough experience and all that. Also, I am not sure if I have the personality for politics, I think I'd get eaten alive, especially in Chicago.
ReplyDeleteYou are in just the right city to be biding your time for a few years...
