Payback Time

Never mind Gadaffi, small fry then as now. Never mind people, impossible to trace, who put into NORAID collecting tins. The two superpowers of the day were the really big funders of the IRA. The one that still exists did so because of the IRA's campaign against the Workers' Party. NORAID publications in the Reagan years made this perfectly clear, and seemed to think it unremarkable.

This is the context of the signing of the Anglo-Irish Agreement, and the denied maintenance of continuous communication with the IRA, by Reagan's dear friend, Margaret Thatcher. Perhaps they should go after her millions, too? And Bill Clinton's, since he lifted the ban on IRA funding? And the Kennedys'?

  1. Absolutely correct except of cours that you continue to give credence to the "Official IRA" a bunch of total no hopers. You are of ourse right that NORAID used the spectre to solicit funds in Boston and New York.
My own opinion on the Compensation Culture attaching itself to the Troubles is well known in your own Blog (and severa others).
In my biggest brush with death a loaded gun was shoved in my mouth during a robbery.
I had to walk home that night and arrived in time to hear the local news and my own small part in the days events.
Nobody (I worked for a public body) suggested taking a day off.
and six months later I left that job and was briefly unemployed until actually finding a better job for some 31 years.
Compensation? Well no. In those days nobody realised every incident had a price for compensation attached.
Some years later somebody suggested that I try.
The time limit was as I recall 10 days for damage to property and 30 days for injury.
Where does that actually leave victims from the Troubles earliest days.
    Do we desrve ANYTHING?
    Frankly NO.
I like most people went on to make a good life
Policeand Prison Officers have been suitably rewarded for their trauma thanks to good Unions.
And solicitors have enriched themslves for 25 years. They were a bit late junping on the band wagon.
The four person Victims Commission wanted £30,000 for the family of EVERY victim regardless of circumstance. I opposed that.
Clearly wrong that (for example) the Shankill bomber be classed as a victim and his family get the same amount as his eight victims.

Likewise joining ANY army legal or illegal is a dangerous business.
The logic of this is that we are all victims (I refuse to believe that) but its a nonsense peddled by the Conflict Resolution idiots at QUB.
This £30k for all and the "I wanna sue Libya" Or Noraid is nonsensical result.
I have actually written to the Guardian on this today.

  2. I don't take the Official IRA seriously. The CIA, through NORAID, did.
