The worst thing that you can all anyone in Parliament is a liar. No, please don’t laugh. It is the absolute taboo. There used to be a perfectly good reason for this. The worst thing that a Member could do was lie to the House.
But today, it is clear that Gordon Brown has done so repeatedly with regard to his plans for spending cuts. No one bats an eyelid.
And there is a perfectly good reason for that, too. Tony Blair lied to Parliament so routinely, and across such a wide range of issues up to and including going to war, that no one really notices when his successor does so on one (albeit hugely important) question.
All that remains is the literal unspeakability of naming the liar on the floor of the House that was lied to.

And Margaret Thatcher and John Major would never talk to Terrorists.
ReplyDeleteFortunate then you will never get elected. You will have 600+ people out there calling you one.
ReplyDeleteIf Keith Waterhouse had ever met you then he would probably been inspired to produce a second volume of his most famous work.
BDJ, I honestly don't know what you're talking about. But then, nor do you.
