We needed Syria in the Gulf War, so we agreed to blame Libya instead. We need Syria even more now, but this obscenity stands in the way. Redress is urgently necessary both in itself and for that reason.
But not because of any need to cuddle up close to Libya. For all the Italianisation of a tiny minority, Libya is run by a thoroughly thuggish family, and at least one third of the population adheres to the Sanusi synthesis of Wahhabism and popular Sufism.
