Myth-Mongering

Last night’s Newsnight piece on religion in the Noughties was like something out of the Twilight Zone.

At one point, Sir Simon Jenkins talked about “demythologisation”. What next, “the Space Age”? John Spong still writes like that, so why not? And the reporter talked about “doubt that dares to speak its name”. How very novel!

So, which decade was this really about? The Fifties? The Thirties? The 1890s? It could have been any of them, and several others besides. But it certainly could not have been the years since 2000.
