A special round of applause for Tabere Vazquez, practising doctor and popular President of Uruguay, who has resigned from that country’s Socialist Party after 25 years of membership because of its newfangled support for abortion.
One of the key factors that brought me into the Catholic Church was Her uniquely coherent exposition of the indivisibility of traditional family values and social justice. The world is crying out for that. Dr Vazquez went into politics in order to promote it. And President Vazquez is certainly doing so, not least by this most courageous action.
