Deny Chennai

Its name is Madras.

We owe it to the massacred Muslims of Gujarat, to the massacred Christians of Orissa, and to the massacred Dalits all over the place, just for a start, not to call cities by names invented and imposed by their murderers.

  1. It up to the Indians what they call their cities. The Times this week announced it would use the name Mumbai from now on in respect to the new age.

What next, some Dutch guy demanding the big apple should return to New Amsterdam (in the Dutch language) invoking the memory of Dutch New Amsterdamers M. Van Buren, T Roosevelt (both members of the Dutch Reformed Church) and F. Roosevelt.

And why not? After all New York and indeed the NY capital Albany were named after James, Duke of Albany and York - a political figure hardly admired by even the Founding Fathers.

They bear the name of tyrant. It is time to return to name related to tolerance and progression - Amsterdam!

God Save the House of Orange!
