It turns out that one per cent of households owns, not the enormous 18 per cent of the nation's wealth that had previously been suggested, but a staggering 23 per cent.
Economic inequality is incompatible with democracy.
Money talks, and if some people have far more money than others, then their voices are far louder, so that, in effect, their votes count for more. If they can be bothered to vote at all, since they know that they are bound win.
Meanwhile, the people who are effectively silenced may very well also stop voting. There is certainly no remaining reason for us to vote for any of the Conservative Party, the Labour Party, or the Liberal Democrats. But I am the Independent parliamentary candidate for North West Durham. What are you doing?
