Defend Ourselves

Apparently, we need to spend an additional £16 billion on "defence" if we are to continue to be taken seriously by Donald Trump, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, assorted Eastern European neo-Nazis, and whoever, if anyone, is now running Italy.

We are told that the price of such respect has gone up from an already eye-watering two per cent of GDP, which only one of those pays, to a mind-boggling three per cent.

We know this, because we are assured of it by retired top brass on the payrolls of arms companies, and by a Committee of MPs who are on the particular Committee with a view to future such remuneration. So it must be true.

Alternatively, we could just get the hell out of NATO, leaving Trump, the Turkish Islamists and the SS Reenactment Societies to get on with it.

But remember that five of the 11 members of the Defence Select Committee are Labour MPs. Check their names against the rebellions on the EU, in effect on Heathrow, this afternoon on the egregious Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, and on any and everything else that might come along.

There is going to be another hung Parliament. That much is inevitable. Our people need to hold the balance of power in it. I need £10,000 in order to stand for Parliament with any chance of winning.
