Throne and Altar?

70 per cent of 18-29-year-olds in Britain have no religion, with more Catholics than Anglicans, who are statistically tied with Muslims. The atheist domination is even higher in Sweden and in the Netherlands, as is the Islamic element in that latter. Denmark and Norway well are on the way down the same road.

All in all, there is nothing to be said for Protestant monarchy. There is not much to be said for Catholic monarchy, either. But there do not seem to be figures for Luxembourg or Monaco, and no one suggests that there are more young Protestants than young Catholics in either of them, any more than in Spain or in Belgium.

Catholic monarchy is not doing well in Europe. But Protestant monarchy is, in its own terms, a disaster.
