Watford Gap

The media are determined to praise the NATO jamboree, but in fact it resembles the funeral, wake and will-reading of someone whose numerous descendants, having turned up for the sausage rolls, realise that they have very little in common, that they often do not like each other very much, and that they are not even sure who many of each other are.

Even the claim that NATO "won" a generation ago does not really stack up. Its enemy collapsed exactly as and when it always would have done, and then it turned out never to have been a serious military threat in the first place. The only ever invocation of the NATO Charter has been the war in Afghanistan, and look how that has turned out.

Yet there NATO still is, throwing its birthday bashes and what have you. We pay two per cent of our Gross Domestic Product for this, and even the manifesto of Jeremy Corbyn's Labour Party commits us to it. Another hung Parliament is coming, however, and we need our people to hold the balance of power in it. I am standing for Parliament here at North West Durham. The crowdfunding page is here, and buy the book here. Please email davidaslindsay@hotmail.com. Very many thanks.
