No, we most certainly should not double the budget of the National Crime Agency.
Instead, we need a return to preventative policing based on foot patrols, with Police Forces at least no larger than at present, and with the restoration of the network of police stations and police houses that placed the Police at the very heart of their communities.
But to a member of the Thatcherite-Blairite rump that still dominates British politics, nothing could be more trilling than the thought that one day, he or she might be the person in control of a central government Police Force.
Another hung Parliament is coming, however, and we need our people to hold the balance of power in it. It has become a local commonplace that I am on 30-30-30 with Labour and the Conservatives here at North West Durham, so that any one of us could be the First Past the Post.
