Neither New Nor Different

"I want to be part of something new and something different," says John Woodcock.

He then proceeds to call for a new "centrist" party of Labour Blairites, Conservative Blairites, and, since he does not know or understand very much, Lib Dems such as opposed the Iraq War and the Blair Government's attacks on civil liberties.

Although the Lib Dems did go on to be part of the Coalition, with its Bedroom Tax, its war on Libya, and all the rest of it, so he is sort of right in spite of himself.

For 20 years, these people pretended to be in competition with each other, and they tried to make us feel that it was our fault that we were unable to tell the difference. But now that they face some real competition, they blithely admit that they have all been the same all along.

And Woodcock leaves quite the stay-behind network in the Parliamentary Labour Party. But there is going to be another hung Parliament, and we need our people to hold the balance of power in it. I need £10,000 in order to stand for Parliament with any chance of winning.

As the Member of Parliament for North West Durham, my Westminster office would be a global centre for the broadly based opposition and alternative to neoliberal economic policy and to neoconservative foreign policy, strongly asserting that opposition and that alternative as the real centre ground.
