Ever Vigilant?

Greater Manchester?

Especially below a certain age and arrived at Durham, people from the leafier corners of Lancashire and Cheshire often claim, when first asked whence they hailed, that they are from "Manchester". Mancunians, of course, regard this as altogether beneath derision.

By contrast, people from the other nine - yes, nine - cities and boroughs in Greater Manchester react with a pronounced lack of enthusiasm to the mere mention of the words, and go to great lengths to explain how unlike Manchester there own community is, how they still insist on giving Lancashire in their postal addresses, and so on.

No wonder that the councils did not want this directly elected Mayor for the entire conurbation. Such offices are in any case wholly out of place in this country.
