A Splendid Development

Gavin Shuker is the only Pentecostal pastor in Parliament. (If it matters, he is white.) He has defended the healing power of prayer against the Advertising Standards Authority. Born only in 1981, he upheld the traditional definition of marriage at every stage of the parliamentary process.

And, with impeccable Blue Labour connections, he is now a Shadow Minister for International Development, under a Shadow Secretary of State whose staunch Blairism is such that he is fairly unlikely to be in the next Cabinet for very long, if at all.

Nevertheless, whereas DfID presently devotes much of its time to spreading abortion in the poor world exactly as in the Thatcher and Major years, Jim Murphy is a practising Catholic and, with specific responsibility for the brief currently interpreted in those terms, his Ministerial team in waiting includes Gavin Shuker.
