Learned Friends

How common is it for medical doctors to read for the Bar or to qualify as solicitors as, what, a little light diversion? Truly, there are some high-powered people out there. And thankfully, they are on the right side. If they really are motivated by contempt for Tony Blair, the person whom Naomi Campbell would be if she had never read a book, then it is no wonder, and indeed it is even more to their credit.

The ancient office of Coroner, meanwhile, is under threat. A standalone position with no career structure and thus absolutely independent, it is a glorious thing, able to bring both State and commercial power to book in any village hall. No wonder that it has been allowed nowhere near the case of Dr David Kelly, although it really is very difficult to believe that that jaw-dropping situation will now obtain for very much longer. Not everything about this Government is bad. This Inquest will be one good thing. Saving Coroners would be another.
