Most obviously, if you pay tax at forty per cent, then you are eligible to reclaim 25p from the taxman for every pound donated to charity. You just need to include the details on your self-assessment form. If you pay fifty per cent, then you can claim back an extra 37.5p.

So, if Blair has registered the donation for Gift Aid, as the Royal British Legion understandably encourages donors to do, then he could personally reclaim more than a third of his £1.75m.

Of course, he could instead rebate the higher rate tax relief to the Legion...
