Because Some People Still Don't Get It

Academic Marxism long ago moved on from economics to the culture wars. That New Labour has never renationalised the coal industry or whatever, and that the New Tories presumably wouldn't either, is wholly beside the point.

Such renationalisation would, in fact, be a thoroughly conservative thing to do. Which is why New Labour has never done it. And which is why the New Tories wouldn't do it.

  1. Perhaps because I've never been very academic, I've stuck with plain Marxism. As for the culture wars - though agnostic, I respect the faith communities in this country. Culturally I'm Catholic, I suppose: though pro-choice I think abortion is not a good one; I support civil partnerships for those in same-sex relationships, but find adoption rather odd.

Renationalisation is not only conservative - it is "what works" for working people in this country. And don't the politicans always go on about doing "what works" rather than being stubbornly ideological?
