Knows No Limits?

"No return to austerity" means that if Rachel Reeves did it, then it could not be austerity. She thinks that we are daft. And she has already started. The means-testing of the Winter Fuel Payment cannot be austerity, because it is being done by her. See how it works?

No party of working people could fail to be a party of protest. By declaring, accurately, that Labour was not the latter, Reeves is admitting, and indeed celebrating, that it is not the former, either.

If you wanted to see what the Labour Party was, then consider that a mere heckler, hardly a terrorist, had been manhandled out of its Conference amid cheers from the assembled sycophants. If Unite's motion on the Winter Fuel Payment were ever brought to the floor, then it would be on Wednesday afternoon, when most people had gone home. That is my union, so what are we paying for?

For far less money, Lord Alli gets whatever he wants. The fixer to whom scores of Labour MPs owe their selection, Matt Faulding, did the job on secondment from Alli's office. It is easy, and not wrong, to laugh at the idea of anyone's sartorial choices being influenced by Keir Starmer's, or at the question of what Taylor Swift gained by having Darren Jones in her audience. But fundamentally and ultimately, this business is no laughing matter at all.

  1. You'll know this but Faulding is now secretary of the PLP.
