Calling A Spad A Spad

Like the Left, the Conservatives rightly thought that this sort of thing was a joke and worse in the Blair years. Yet look at them now.

In Number 10 alone, five people are listed under "Private Office", and they all have "Chief", "Director" or "Head" in their job titles, so just how many more are there? One of the five is "Deputy Chief of Staff (Policy)", while another is "Deputy Chief of Staff (Political)".

There are 13 persons named as "Political", plus two who are "Legislative", yet 16 more are in the "Policy & Briefing Unit", including a reassuringly fortysomething old friend of mine, but even so. While those are Briefing, then a further 12 are in the "Press Team".

Still, one of the Treasury boys is called Adam Smith. They cannot have put that in as a joke, since what would that make the rest of the list?

  1. I'd love to know which No. 10 Spad was an old mate of yours.
