The Conservatives bought into their own propaganda that Margaret Thatcher had been brought down by "Europe" rather than, as in fact, by the Poll Tax. So they decided that opposition to the EU was not "Loony Left" after all, but instead about "Brussels red tape".
Yet lo and behold, here they are promising not only to continue to abide by all the hated "regulation", but to do so even without the slightest say over its content. Anyone would think that the EU had always been worse than useless for workers' rights, for consumer protection, for environmental standards, and so on, the real road to which was the election of a British Government with a genuine commitment to those things.
But Labour and the Liberal Democrats are either going to abstain on this buck-passing vassalage, or they are going to vote in favour of it. But I am the Independent parliamentary candidate for North West Durham. What are you doing?
