What a thrilling list of appointments to the House of Lords today. Four of the five Labour ones have lost their seats in either the House of Commons or the European Parliament.
Not only was one of them ejected by the electors of Lincoln fully 10 years ago, but her present employment makes her ennoblement the most calculated insult to a section of Labour’s own electorate by that means since Tony Blair still felt it necessary to spit in the faces of the Durham miners in 1998.
Several of the people listed here would merit peerages, and in some cases it is fair to assume that they had turned down the ermine. But at the very least, each of the initiating and supporting groups ought to name someone whom it considered belonged in Parliament.
Those are the Arab Labour Group, the Black Labour Movement, Labour Against Racism and Fascism, Labour Friends of Kashmir, Latinx for Corbyn, Kurds for Labour, Indians for Labour, Labour Friends of Yemen, the Jewish Socialists’ Group, Women of Colour in the Global Women’s Strike, London Young Labour BAME Network, and the South Asia Solidarity Group.
Meanwhile, none of the Change UK lot has taken a seat on the red benches. They still think that they are getting back onto the green ones. It would take a heart of stone not to laugh.
